- Abstract
Dementia is a progressive cognitive decline that impacts an individual's ability to function independently (Duong et al., 2017). This cognitive decline often leads to these individuals being diagnosed with a mental health diagnosis like depression (Bergdahl et al., 2011) or anxiety (Spector et al., 2015). To better understand this issue, this project focused on educating the employees at the skilled nursing facility on tailoring the activities and occupations that the residents participate in to help improve the patient's quality of life, decrease their mental health problems, and to reduce the behaviors that occur when they are given tasks or activities that are too challenging for their cognitive level. A survey a used to assess the program. The findings were that the staff gained increased knowledge of how to care for an individual based on their ACL level, decreased caregiver burden when residents were appropriately cued, and increased resident participation when activities were cognitively appropriate.
