Abstract
  • Addressing sexuality and intimacy within the scope of occupational therapy has been challenging due to practitioner and client lack of comfort, knowledge, and willingness to begin the conversation surrounding the topic. Literature has demonstrated a call to address sexuality and intimacy, however, there was still a need to further understand the barriers and what was important to best implement sexuality and intimacy into practice. To address this problem, the objective of this study was to utilize the Delphi method to identify research priorities for the international practice of occupational therapy in addressing clients’ sexuality and intimacy needs. We set out to determine relevant and feasible research priorities across three themes: increasing education of current and future practitioners, advancing the understanding of occupational nature of sexuality and intimacy, and examining current practice trends and interventions to address sexuality and intimacy. Our results show that experts agreed on the need to create new educational standards, and develop greater understanding of the various factors impacting clients occupational nature, which will in turn better enhance clinical practice trends when it comes to addressing sexuality and intimacy. Keywords: sexuality, intimacy, occupational therapy, international delphi approach
