Abstract
  • The purpose of this study is to compare the attitudes and opinions of those that attend leadership programming in regard to political interest and engagement. By analyzing anonymous surveys taken before and after a leadership training module, the variation between responses was measured to form conclusions on the effectiveness regarding leadership training. In this study, programming regarding female elected officials and engagement in political elections was presented to undergraduate students who were then taught and encouraged to practice different skills in order to facilitate more successful student government campaigns. Participants’ responses suggest that the leadership programming does have an effect on their political interest and engagement as they tended to be more likely to participate in elections and to vote for female elected officials after they attended the Elect Her programming. The conclusions reached throughout the study impact the literature on political engagement and the effectiveness of leadership training courses on political interest.
