Abstract
  • Many older adults with dementia experience neuropsychiatric symptoms such as depression, anxiety, agitation, and more (Silva et al., 2018). Due to changes in how their brains interpret the world around them, caregivers must adapt how they create a safe and engaging environment with appropriate activities (Houston & Christie, 2018). To facilitate this environment, I have created a training manual to help staff understand how the sensory systems change for people with dementia, and an intake questionnaire to help staff know their residents’ daily preferences to provide individualized care. I also provided sensory-based activities made specifically for residents with dementia. Following an in-service presentation of the training manual, 3 out of 7 staff members demonstrated increased understanding of using a sensory-based approach when working with residents with dementia. The site could benefit from future occupational therapy services to facilitate increased quality of life and activity engagement of residents with dementia.
