Abstract
  • Background: The purpose of this study was to learn what Burmese immigrants living in the United States want healthcare providers, such as physicians and nurses, to know about their preferences for care given at the end of life. “Nearly 12,000 Burmese refugees” (McHenry, Umoren, Dixit, Holliday, & Litzelman, 2016, p. 151) reside in the Indianapolis area. Understanding Burmese cultural needs and preferences is important to delivering high-quality health care. Method: Qualitative basic interpretive design utilizing an in-person interview. Sample: 9 local Burmese immigrants. Data Analysis: Hand-coding and looking for commonly occurring ideas or themes in participant responses. Results: Five common themes were noted: the Burmese culture is family-oriented, there is a significant language barrier, there are issues with explanation and education, religion and culture are important, and there is an overall lack of experience in healthcare settings.
