Abstract
  • The following paper includes background information regarding the adult mental health and forensic population at the NeuroDiagnostic Institute. The adult mental health population has vast health disparities that prevent the clients from successful community reintegration. The capstone project addressed increasing health literacy and the implementation of a health literacy program at the NeuroDiagnostic Institute as a research-based option for increasing effective communication between healthcare professionals and clients. The health literacy project is supplemented by a 5-week trial health literacy adult group session led by the capstone student to gather valuable data, validate the use of health literacy, and validate the use of research-based assessment measures into the site’s standards. The culmination of the project includes a final comprehensive health literacy training session to the adult population staff and a dissemination to the site clinical directors for continuation and sustainability of the health literacy program.
